The thing is, you can never know what is "pointless" at the time. Do you know why computers have a selection of fonts with proper spacing? Because Steve Jobs dropped out of college and took a calligraphy class.
Somebody who is so self-important that they always have to do "important" things will never do anything worthwhile, because they are slaves to an artificial idea of what is high and worthy and what is trivial.
